Sharing a King Studio: how twinning works and what it saves
Sharing a room is the oldest way to make Manhattan affordable. Doing it without a joint lease attached is the part that is hard to find.

The arithmetic, first
The King Studio is $745 a week in total, not per person. Split between two residents that is $372.50 each — below the $525 Deluxe rate for a room of your own with a shared bathroom down the hall.
So two people sharing get an en-suite bathroom and the largest room in the building, and each pays less than the cheapest single-occupancy option. That is the whole case, and it only works because the rate is per room rather than per head.
- King Studio, two sharing — $372.50 each per week, en-suite
- Deluxe Room, alone — $525 a week, shared bathroom
- Studio Basic, alone — $650 a week, en-suite
What twinning actually means
The King Studio is the only room type here set up for two. It takes a queen bed that can be configured as a twin, which is the practical difference between two people sharing a room and two people sharing a bed.
There are nine King Studios in a building of sixty-one rooms. If this is the plan, enquire together and enquire early — it is the smallest pool of the three types.
What you are not signing up for
This is the part that separates it from a flatshare. You are not taking on a joint lease with joint and several liability, which on most shared apartments means each tenant is legally responsible for the whole rent — so if the other person leaves, the remaining one can be pursued for all of it.
Here the arrangement is with the building. No co-signer, no shared lease, no exposure to the other person's credit. Sharing by choice, without the mechanics that usually come attached.
Who it works for, and who it does not
It works when the two of you already know how the other lives — a couple, siblings, people who have shared before. Nine months is the minimum stay, and that is a long time to discover you keep incompatible hours in one room.
It does not work as a way to meet someone. This is not roommate matching; it is a room for two people who arrive as two people.
And the room is still one room. The building's answer to needing space apart is the lounge, the courtyard and the communal kitchen — which is a real answer, but it is not a second room.
What the rate covers for both of you
Electricity, gas, heat, water, sewer, trash, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and weekly housekeeping, all inside the $745. Linens, wardrobe, desk, smart TV, mini-fridge, microwave and kettle come with the room.
No full kitchen — no stove, no oven. Cooking happens in the communal kitchen downstairs, which for two people sharing is worth walking down to see before you commit.
