East 40th Street between Lexington and Third is a quiet residential stretch that happens to sit on top of the busiest transport interchange in the country. You get the side street and the terminal at the same time.
Trains
Five subway lines, Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road, all inside a five-minute walk.
Grand Central is the interchange the rest of the city is measured against. From the front door it is four minutes on foot, which means the 4, 5, 6, 7 and S are effectively at the end of the block, and a commute out to Westchester, Connecticut or Long Island starts without a transfer.

Campuses and hospitals
Door to door by subway or on foot, whichever is faster. A good share of residents are students or on medical rotations, which is why these are the times that get asked about most.
Day to day
Murray Hill and Kips Bay carry the ordinary end of living here: grocery stores on Third Avenue, pharmacies on Lexington, laundries, hardware, a gym on almost every block. Nothing about restocking a fridge on a Tuesday evening is difficult.
For the rest, the Morgan Library is a seven-minute walk and free to sit outside, the New York Public Library and Bryant Park are nine, and Koreatown on 32nd Street is close enough to be a default rather than an outing. Grand Central Market handles everything you forgot on the way home.
The block itself stays quiet. East 40th between Lexington and Third is residential on both sides, which is unusual this close to 42nd Street and is the single biggest difference between living here and living two blocks north.
