The problem with the phrase

Utilities included appears on nearly every furnished-room listing in Manhattan, and it means something different on each one. Sometimes it covers heat and water but not electricity. Sometimes it covers everything up to a monthly cap, after which the overage is billed back. Sometimes internet is separate, which is the one that stings, because it is the utility you notice on day one.

The phrase is not dishonest so much as unspecific. The fix is to ask for the list.

What that means on a Deluxe Room

A Deluxe Room is $525 a week. That $525 is the amount that leaves your account. There is no utility account in your name, no deposit to a power company, no internet contract with a twelve-month term and an early-exit fee, and no bill that arrives in month two and changes the arithmetic you did in month one.

For a stay measured in weeks this matters more than the headline rate. A cheaper room with four separate accounts attached is not cheaper; it is the same money with more admin and a worse worst case.

What the rate does not cover

Two things, stated plainly.

There is no full kitchen in any room. Rooms have a mini-fridge, a microwave and a kettle - no stove, no oven. Cooking happens in the communal kitchen downstairs. This is the most common surprise for new residents and it is better encountered on a page than at a door.

And housekeeping is weekly, not daily. It is a serviced room, not a hotel room.
