The NYC intern housing timeline: when to book for summer

The calendar nobody publishes

Summer internship offers in New York land in a fairly narrow window. Finance and professional services run earliest, often deciding the previous autumn. Most other programmes confirm between January and March. Very few confirm in May.

Housing follows the offers by a few weeks, not a few months. By the time somebody starts looking in May, they are choosing from what the December-to-March cohort did not take.

What each window looks like in practice

Roughly, and allowing for the fact that every programme differs.

• December to January — offers confirmed, dates still approximate. The right time to hold something, not to finalise.
• February to March — dates firm up. This is when the widest choice still exists at the rate you planned for.
• April — the entry-rate rooms thin out. Choice narrows to the higher rates and the less convenient dates.
• May to June — you are working with whatever is left, in the most expensive month of the year to be arranging anything in Manhattan.

Why the cheapest rooms go first, every year

There are fifteen Deluxe rooms in this building, out of sixty-one. They are the entry rate at $525 a week, and they are the ones an intern budget is usually built around.

Twenty-five Studio Basic rooms and nine King Studios make up the rest. The en-suite rooms hold availability longer simply because fewer people are looking at that rate — which means a February booking often gets a choice, and a May booking often gets whichever room is free.

What a twelve-week placement actually costs

Weekly rates, seven-night minimum, everything included — utilities, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and weekly housekeeping.

• Deluxe Room — $525 a week, $6,300 across twelve weeks
• Studio Basic — $650 a week, $7,800 across twelve weeks
• King Studio — $745 a week, $8,940 across twelve weeks, and shareable as a twin at $372.50 each

What to have ready when you enquire

Booking early is easier than it sounds, because there is no application in the apartment sense — no guarantor form, no credit check, no co-signer, and no joint liability with other residents.

What actually speeds it up is knowing your dates. Arrival and departure, even approximate, plus which room type you are budgeting for. Send those and you will get availability and a full quote back, normally the same working day.

If your programme has not confirmed exact dates yet, say so. Approximate dates in February are worth more than exact dates in May.
