The mismatch every intern runs into

Internships run ten to twelve weeks. Manhattan leases run twelve months. Everything difficult about finding intern housing comes out of that one gap - the sublets that fall through, the guarantor forms, the deposits on an apartment you will leave in August.

A weekly rate closes the gap directly. The minimum stay is seven nights and the rate is quoted by the week, so a twelve-week placement is simply twelve weeks. At the Deluxe rate of $525 a week that is $6,300 for the summer, with utilities, Wi-Fi and weekly housekeeping already in the number.

There is no co-signer requirement and no joint liability with other residents, which is usually the point where an international intern or a first-year student runs out of options.

Why the east side, specifically

Midtown East is where a large share of New York's internship intake actually reports each morning, and the geography here is unusually forgiving.

The 4, 5 and 6 run from Grand Central straight down the east side to the Financial District, so a finance or professional-services placement downtown is a single ride with no transfer. The United Nations is a fourteen-minute walk, and the consulates cluster through the East 40s and 50s. NYU Langone Health is fifteen minutes and Weill Cornell Medicine twenty-four, which covers most medical rotations. Cornell Tech is twenty-seven minutes.

Grand Central being four minutes away is the part that compounds. Five subway lines plus Metro-North from one station means a placement almost anywhere in the region resolves to one train.

Book earlier than feels necessary

Summer intern housing in New York is decided in winter. Offers land between December and March, and the people who sort accommodation in that window get the room they wanted at the rate they planned for. The ones who wait until May are choosing from what is left.

Sixty-one rooms is not a large building. Fifteen of them are Deluxe rooms at the entry rate, and those are the first to go for the summer.

What the summer actually costs

One number, weekly, covering the room and everything that keeps it running. No utility accounts, no internet contract, no furniture, no broker.

• Deluxe Room - $525 a week, $6,300 across a twelve-week internship
• Studio Basic - $650 a week, $7,800 across twelve weeks, en-suite
• King Studio - $745 a week, $8,940 across twelve weeks, and shareable as a twin

Sharing, if two of you are interning together

The King Studio is the only room that can be twinned. Two interns on the same programme splitting one at $745 a week come to $372.50 each, which is below the Deluxe rate and buys an en-suite bathroom and the largest room in the building.

Nine King Studios exist. If this is the plan, it is worth enquiring together and early.
